Memory solutions for future AthlonMP boards?

I was wondering if it's possible to simply purchase say, 4 sticks of 256mb PC2100 ECC registered, and feel safe in the knowledge that this will be supported by most or all of the future AthlonMP motherboards?

I have this feeling ram won't be cheap forever, especially DDR...

That question can only be answered by determining if registered DDR RAM will work on boards that do not require registered RAM.

With SDRAM, I don't think you could mix the two, as the PCBs and the pin alignments were different. I don't know if the same can be said for DDR, if the initial statement is correct in the place.
