I know that this perhaps may be a somewhat silly question....

I have been running Windows 2000 for about a month now and must say that I really like / trust it quite a bit. The only thing is that I find it a little slow and it actually freezes once in a while for about twenty seconds, then keeps going.

To be honest I hadn't been watching the price of RAM and the other day saw that the price is really good. Now, if I have only 128mb of RAM and I added one or maybe two 256mb chips how much of a improvement would I see? The price is currently $47 for 256, so I think that it certainly is time to make the leap!
 
The answer, of course, is "it depends."

In general, adding memory is the best way to improve the performance of your computer.

Assuming that your machine is not disk-bound when these stutters occur, I imagine you'll be very pleased with additional memory.

Also, W2K's memory manager handles more memory much better than Win9x.
 
maybe I'm wrong on this but as a rule of thumb I won't run win 2k on any of my machines that don't have 256k of ram. For example, I've tried to run win2k on my 700 celi with 192 megs ram... it ran, but it was very laggy. On a p3 800 with 512k it runs really smooth.
