Memory Question

I just got a new 512 stick of memory. It won't show up as a total of 1g of memory, just the original 512 meg memory shows up. My mobo is a Chaintech VNF3-250, the memory sticks are XMS Corsair 3200 sticks. I've tried seating it numerous times to no avail.

Did you try running your new memory alone? What about changing which banks they are in? You already know your old ram works in your system. Your next step is to make sure your new ram is good. Corsair makes good memory. I've got 2 sticks running in my machine. Lets take a step by step trouble shooting process. Let us know if it registers when you run it alone.

Ok, I tried each combination possible (except the 2nd and 3rd banks together, my mobo doesn't allow that). The new ram works alone but on Control Panel > System it shows 512mb no matter what combination I use. Any suggestions? I guess it's my mobo?

I'm running XP. Thing is, I've looked all over the bios and haven't found the amount of memory shown. The timings are shown just not the amount of memory. In task manager I only get around 512mb though.

I think he's (gutharius) is speaking of the ram count in the POST (pre-operating system test) when you boot up. Your ram count will ususally flash on the screen before the OP system loads. Unless you have disabled that feature in BIOS (or if it's an HP or such, they seem to have it disabled from the factory).

EDIT: Why not double-check windows with a proggie like Memtest86. When you boot to it, it'll show the amount ram in the uper left-hand corner. It won't use windows info since's it's a free standing bootable proggie. Plus it'll test the stability of your ram as well.

That one only shows 512 mb as well. I'll run memtest sometime tonight, but I doubt that works just because I am still getting memory leaks and having to reboot just as fast with EQ2 as when I only had 1 stick of ram in. Thanks for the help so far everyone.

Don't think you'll have any mem leak problem with memtest86. It's a stand-alone proggie that you boot directly into. I.e., windows never starts uo and has nothing to do with it.. It's a pure hardware test.
