Memory Question for Dell Dimension 4400

I bought one of the cheap Dell P4 1.6 computers that uses PC2100 DDR SDRAM. I want to add to it and with prices rising, am wanting to buy soon. My question is what "quality" of RAM do I really need for this system. For example, 512 MB of Crucial PC2100 is now $200. But you can buy Mushkin Basic ram for $125 Here at Mushkin or you can buy 512 MB of Transcend for $126 Here at AccessMicro.

Won't both of these work fine in this Dell desktop. Obviously I will not be overclocking the system -- how could I, its a Dell ! 🙂 Or do I need to pay $200 just for memory in a COMPLETE computer that only cost $465. 🙁 I have lotsa PC133 SDRAM around now to sell on Flea bay or something (2 256 MB chips) to help defray the cost.

I would pull one of the dell memory modules out and see what you have. I use micron pc2100 non-ecc, and it runs fine at 135 fsb on my overclocked P4 1.6a. A total of 512 megs of pc2100 is plenty, unless you plan on doing some video editing.

For those prices, and since you are not going to overclock, I would go with the Mushkin.

And yes, 512MB is more than enough. 🙂 Sell off your old RAM to further cut costs.

Do you think adding 256 would be PLENTY -- I work some with my digital photo's and editing, but not a lot. I was worried if I bought 256, I will use all the slots (2) and cannot add more without dumping the 128 MB -- maybe that is better any way,. buy 256 now and add it to the 128 and see what happens to prices ?
