memory question BUILDING A PC

Im about to order the parts to build my first computer...I doubt I will be interested in overclocking but its a possiblity for the future
Ive been looking through the forums for info on memory and I cant figure out for sure if I know enough about all of it to get the right kind so Im wondering if anyone could help me out a little.

Here are the vitals of the system:

P4 3.0GHz 800MHz bus
Intel D875PBZ Motherboard

Ill be using it for mostly gaming and alot of graphics editing and some video editing.

Im on a little bit of a tight budget but I could stomach spending 200 or so if it was really going to up the performance. Im thinking Ill need at least 1 GB and right now Im looking at Crucial dual-channel DDR SDRAM PC3200. Are there other brands I should consider first (Corsair, Buffalo, etc...), do I need more, less, is this the right type, do you know if it will be compatible and run well with my processor and motherboard? Needless to say Im new. If anyone can give me any tips or suggestions otherwise, Im basically relying on stuff Ive read here and elsewhere to decide so any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You say you will be doing no overclocking? What are you thinking 😉

ANyhow, go for some Hyper X (Kingston) PC3200 for about $ 100 a 512 module..

That way you have a bit of head room when overclocking if need be...

Mine will do 220 FSB 2/3/3/6

😀

edit: Definitely go for the gig also.

Thanks for the help, that looks like some good stuff, however, it looks to be just out of my price range (I cant find it for less than 125 each stick). But I'll keep looking...

Another question...I have the feeling that DDR SDRAM is what I want but I dont see that discussed in any of these posts. What are the different types and which do I want to go with and why?

Also...Im interested to know what dual channel memory is and which processors/motherboards support this feature. In addition, I though PC3200 was a measure of the speed of the memory but most memory has a MHz number also associated with it. What is this and how is it related to the PC3200 spec.

Thanks again for anyone kind enough to help a poor n00b like myself.

Remember that an intel motherboard is reliable but means no overclocking (beyond the couple of % "burn-in"). For intel you might as well just get a pair of crucial sticks. Also Abit and Asus have both turned on PAT in their i865 motherboards so you could save a little money by buying an Abit IS7 or Asus P4P800 instead, since they run at i875 speeds.
