I just got my Microsoft Subscribers pack and am trying to install Windows 2003 Server, besides the point because it does it with XP as well, I have not tried RedHat!.
Short version: IM SCREWED, computer will not let me install any OS, even after changing out practically everything. No matter what I do I still end up with a blinking monitor (no signal) or a BSOD with errors, which change every time, even if I dont change anything and just reboot and restart installation! When I did have windows XP installed, (which took forever) the computer would just reboot or turn off by itself, times differentiating on when it did, so it was not like it was a certain driver I suppose.
Anyway, i have a Athlon Slot A 950 and a Gigabyte GA-7VX-1 mobo. Right now, the only thing taking up slots is the video card, I have unplugged everything else and disabled the onboard sound.
Things I have tried:
1.) As far as memory goes, I have tried about every configuration with 6 different sticks as humanly imaginable, but no matter what I still get some form of error while trying to install an OS or booting. Some times the monitor will come on, other times it will not, However, when I turn the PSU off with the PC on, (black switch in back) and turn it back on and then turn the computer on, everything comes on correctly. You can tell me that I have 6 sticks of "bad" ram, but I do get the "PAGE_FAULT_X_X_X" error, which claims I do have faulty memory according to microsoft!
2.) I have even formatted the HD, but that now give me a black screen with errors/giberish when I try to boot the CD. I had to use a win98 boot disk to go in and delete the partition, and create a new one and format it, and then let setup format it to NTFS which left me with a 0x000xxx7e error that has something to do with problems reading the NTFS blah blah blah!, it gave me a FAT error 0x000xxx7d before which is why I switched to NTFS, (this ended up leaving me with the black screen errors)
3.) Taken out all the hardware except what is critical to run it.
4.) I have cleared CMOS (taken out the battery for 5 min) and reset the BIOS to defaults
5.) I noticed that when it does make it past all the beginning setup and copying of files, it freezes when it should be going to the GUI setup screen. I have a ATI 128 AIW 16mb and I have not switched out video cards yet, I only have a voodoo3 3000 as an extra though!.
6.) One BSOD, said something about DRIVER_X_X_X, which is why I formatted, because i figured the drivers from XP might be conflicting some how!
7.) I have not changed out the video card, processor, or PSU. I am hoping it is the PSU or something else that is "fixable" without spending money, (dang ram prices are expensive, $50 for 256mb of PC100)
Anyway, I believe I have done everything I know, except what I mentioned and I know its not software because the software installs fine on other computers! Any help is appreciated.
