Memory Problems

I have a feeling, that theres something wrong with the memory in my PC (800mhz Duron on DFI-AK74, not overclocked)
I'm running winME, and recentley i added a 512mb module, to my 2x128mb modules. Since then, i have had some stability problems. It crashes 2+ times pr. day when using internet explorer. It crashes frequently when burning cd's. When i try to pack/unpack files with winace, i get a bluescree telling me somthing about an error in "vcache". I hope somebody have some suggestions, to what might be wrong - cuz its really driving me mad.

Also, doesn't Win98 have major problems if there's more than 512MB of RAM in the system? I've had that issue before (with 768MB)

the win9x 512MB kernel bug is about memory management and such.

your problem is most likely with a poorly designed motherboard. usage of all dimm sockets can cause stability issues for poorly designed motherboards.

what happens if you just use the 512 module only or the 2x128 modules only.

I've tried running the 2x128mb by them self, and they seemed to be fine, ill try running with just the 512mb later today. I dont think its the motherboard, that theres something wrong with. Previously i've used all three sockets (2x128mb + 64mb) without any problems.

This probably isn't your problem, but you never know.

Have you resized your page file since you added another 512 MB of physical memory? Windows memory management isn't all that great, though it's significantly better in 2k. A good measuring stick for how big your page file should be is 1 1/2 times your physical memory size. You can also try getting Cacheman to help further with memory management.

Like I said it's probably not your problem, but windows is odd sometimes

I tried cacheman, but it did'nt do anything.

What is the pagefile, and how do i resize it - im sorry if this is a stupid question, but i don't know much about the more technical parts of windows.

The pagefile is also known as the swap file or simply virtual memory. It's designated space on a hard drive to act as "excess" RAM. You can right click on "My Computer" select properties, performance tab then select virtual memory. A dialog box appears, there should be a check box to allow you to set your page file settings, if it's not checked, do so. Generally you want to set the page file sized to at least 1 1/2 the size of your RAM, so if you have 768 MB of RAM, 1152 MB page file would be the result. It's also generally a good rule of thumb to set the min and max to the same value to increase performance by decreasing the amount at which the pagefile can resize. If you do this, however, make sure you defragment the drive you're page file will be on.

You can defrag a drive by double clicking My Computer and then right clicking the drive your page file is on. Select properties>tools>defrag.

Page File Size:

That page file size sounds a little excessive. It's over a gig. I personally have never have that much physical memory and therefore never had a page file that exceeded 500 or so megs. I'm sure that setting it to 768 MB would be fine as well. If anyone who has a large amount of RAM and experience with sizing the page file could confirm or explain this better that'd be great...

Keep in mind this probably isn't going to solve your problem...
