Thanks to all who helped me the other day to find some software to test the memory in a flaky system I built a while ago. The owner has had ongoing problems with BSD and random reboots.
Well I have been running MemDoc, or at least trying to, for the past few days. It's doing it's test and it freezes up. Thinking it was the memory I replaced it with some brand new Kingston that I just bought and it froze again. At this point I suspect the cache ram so I disabled it and am running the test again.
My question is how common is a problem with the cache ram? I have built many systems and this is the only one that has had a problem. The MB is an Abit PX-5, I've used quite a few Abit boards with out problem. I am debating replacing the board, I wonder if I could get by with just disabling the cache, he only does E-Mail and web browsing, and some low-level games and an occasional scan. How much of a performance hit could I expect doing this?
Any input is appreciated....
Thanks, Matt
