So I've got this older system, Opteron 170, 2GB RAM, XP Pro, (mentioned motherboard) etc..

I wanted to breathe some new life into it by first upgrading to 4GB of RAM, and then eventually laying down a fresh copy of Win7.

So I have 2 different pairs of DDR400 in the system, which now will only let me run at 333.
Previously just running OCZ DDR400 I was running fine at 400MHz.

The memory is: 2x1GB of OCZ DDR400, not sure of exact model, but it has the heat spreaders and lower timings.

The 2nd pair is 2x1GB of Kingston Value RAM. Basic CAS3 stuff...

I've been out of date for a while now, so I hope the answer is obvious to someone, but I don't know how to go about getting the whole 4GB running at 400 like it's suppose to. The system is stable and everything is working correctly, but during POST and CPUID both show the RAM running at 333.

BIOS flash? It's currently on older 0311 if I recall. Somehow disabling dual channel? (Did not see option in BIOS)

Any help would be appreciated :)

It is normal for a board to adjust down memory frequency or timings as you fill up more slots. Especially if they are different pairs, the board will automatically set the parameters to the lower denominator. You can try giving more voltages or loosening timings to get 400MHz back, but my advice would be simply leaving it the way it is unless you see a significant performance drop. (which I doubt)

As far as i can recall, with 4 DIMMs in s939, AMD did not officially support DDR-400, just 333.

The memory controller couldn't handle it properly, from what i recall.

So this is nothing abnormal; it's doing as it is supposed to.

You might be able to increase HTT (FSB) & run close to that speed as that would increase the RAM speed if you use one divider lower.

That is what I am doing with a old K8N-SLI. You have to leave it to 2T with all 4 slots populated as well.

ooo, interesting to know. I have the same board with Athlon 64 3500, was considering upgrading the current 1 GB PC3200 to 2GB, or maybe 3?

I'm in the initial process of replacing this system, so I want to do it on the cheap, put together something that can run Win 7 at 32 and 64bit to help on resale.

It sounds like I can mix sticks, assuming the speed is the same? Currently using OCZ platinum, dual channel PC3200 2x512mb, iirc.

would any 'ol PC3200 DDR from any manufacturer work in addition to the OCZ, whether or not it's 2x512 or 2x 1gb?
