Memory Placement on Motherboard

I have a Dell 9100 cpu which I originally bought with 1 GB ram (2 512 MB chips). It is a dual processor unit. I just got 2 1GB modules and installed them today, but I left the 512 in slots 1 & 3, and put the 1 GB in slots 2 and 4. Does the location where the DRAM modules are placed matter ? ie, will I get better performance if I put the 1 GB chips in slots 1 & 3, and the 512 in 2 & 4 ? All the chips are the same speed.

Thanks for any insight.

No, as long as one channel is populated with the 512's, and one with the 1's, it should be color coded. You can check any number of programs to check if they are running dual channel. However, you may get better preformance with only the 1gb sticks, as you can run at tighter timings then. What is this computer used for?

I've got them in the matchin channels and, as best I can tell, the dual channels seem to be working.

It's a multipurpose machine - lots of typical office apps, Digital Photos with minimal retouching (though there's a lot of them in my files), some limited sound editing and, of late, a lot of home video editing using Pinnacle's Studio 10.

It can if you aren't filling them all. For instance with spots 2 and 3 filled on mine it limits the speed to DDR 333. With 1 and 2 it limits it at DDR 400

if you pair the sticks the right way, you have a better chance of getting dual channel or even getting your BIOS to recognize the RAM speeds correctly.
