I want 512 MB on my mobo.
Should I use 1x512MB or 2x256MB confiiguration for memory for better performance?
Which configuration has more potential for overclocking??

If those two are your only options, I would suggest 2X256MB.
What would be better is 2X512MB.

But, you must make sure that the two sticks are as simillar as possible. The speed will be limited to the speed of the slower stick.

If you are going for a total of 512MB thinking that later you can add more memory if you need to since you have a total of 4 slots, think again!
The memory bandwidth of the P4P800 boards drops when you go to 4 sticks. That is why I suggest 2X512MB.

I might upgrade the memory later by adding another 512MB in a year or so.
For now I only want 512MB and that is only what my budget allows too.
For now, what would be the better configuration in this scenario: 1x512 or 2x256?

The only other thing that I repeat is that using more than 2 slots on thoase board have been reported to degrade performance.

Not sure what your talking about here. I own the P4P800 E deluxe and I've never seen anything limiting performance as long as you stick with decent memory vendors.

asadasif if you need performance now get 2x256mb. If you truthfully can't afford 150 bucks for 2x512mb of value ram and you can live with slower performance get 1 512mb stick now and upgrade when you can.

Good Luck

Its one of those nice to have things. Might be a few more FPS but on the whole I agree with you for most apps you may not notice

AT did a test of various memory configurations--the results are summarized here. Four matched double-sided sticks were the fastest.
