how long can i expect to get decent performance with 1gb (2x512) of ddr400 in dual channel without that being the bottleneck of a mid level gaming/encoding pc?

thanks arcane death. any other opinions out there? looking to buy a mobo w/ 2ddr dc slots and 2 ddr2 dc slots. i didn't want to buy it if 1gb wouldn't last me more than a year and a half. i'm considering going with the comparable mobo w/ the 4 ddr slots and no ddr2. just not sure which'll be the predominant one.

i know that as of right now, in games at maximum settings(such as ut2k4) that they benefit from more then 1 gig. But medium details and such will work fine.

More than 1GB would be overkill for most applications in my opinion, but depending on what your current system is you could still get another one or two 512MB sticks later on if you find that you need it. I don't really know about encoding though.

Just buy an AMD 939 motherboard, with 4 DIMMS. That way if you want 2 gigs later on, you just need to buy 2 more sticks 🙂 That's what I plan to do.

Yeah, 4 DIMM slots with 512MB sticks would be good. I don't think anything is going to require over 2 gigs for a long time.

Yea, there is only 1 or 2 games that benefit from more then 1gig, all other games are fine. However their are other non-game apps that can use more then that.

I've yet to see a game that uses even a gig
