Memory Help

I'm putting together a D945GPM MB with a Pentium D 915 CPU. The memory configurator at two websites says to use PC2-4200 as a kit or PC2-5300 individually. Can someone explain why the difference?

Most likely the chipset can run a pair at PC4200 speeds but can only run a single at 5300 speeds. This is typical, especially of older chipsets.

So what would happen if I install 2 PC2-5300 DDR2 1gb sticks. Would they run at 533 mhz? Thanks for the reply.

It would depend on the bios and how it interprets the SPD. My guess is based on what you posted is that with 2 DIMMs it will set for PC4200.
