my mattress is one of those 'upgrade' models which means you can't flip it. the bottom side is just a flat stiff area. i had the bright idea of putting a memory foam mattress topper on it and then i could leave the mattress upside down for a while. i figure a 4" topper will have enough give for me, who sleeps on my back. whatcha thing atot?

Just go to Costco (or Sam's) and purchase one of their memory foam mattresses (in a box). Queen goes for around $500, Cal King goes for around $700...they work great!

Kids don't beat your door down so much is only benefit. Get a real mattress.

A 4" topper is about the minimum for sleeping on your side so you should be good to go. The only concern would be that it could be too soft and hurt your back because you have the bed under it but you should be ok. I built my mattress: 6 inch hard poly foam + 2 inch soft latex + 4 inch medium latex and my back pain completely went away (sagging old bed killed my back).

Wife and I put a 4" memory foam topper on our bed. It is amazing. Make sure you get one that is 4" memory foam, and not 2" memory foam/2" regular foam. A buddy of mine bought the latter, and he has been regretting it.

Buy a sleep number bed. You will waste time and money on your mattress purchase. I bought a brand name king at Costco. I found myself sleeping in a hole in the memory foam after a few months on it. After turning it, my wife would complain that she was sinking into my hole, and I was enlarging hers.( ;) ). In the end I returned my mattress to costco, bought a 14 inch memory foam bed on Overstock.com. It was great for about 2 weeks until it softened up too much. After 6 months I was waking up hot and trying to roll out of this hole I created. And you couldn't flip that one either. Sold it cheap on Craigslist and spent the $$ on a sleep number bed. Never looked back and love it .. and my wife does too. But don't get the deluxe ones with the thick toppers.. just get the cheap one and slip your own foam topper inside. That way you can turn and flip it at your leisure and replace it after it wears down.
