i went on vacation last week and slept on one for the first time the whole week and now i want one. the only problem is that i have not much of a clue about them. i've been looking on amazon and see they vary in thickness and density. i asked the woman who owns the house we rented if she knew the exact one she bought but she couldn't remember because it's old. if i had to guess i'd say it was either 2 or 3 inches thick though. but i have no clue about the density in it.

i weigh about 200lbs and fluctuate up to around 210lbs or so in the winter usually when i'm bulking up.

so i'm curious if people on here have one and if so, what brand do they have (as well as density and thickness) and how do they like it?

EDIT:

and i do know that some of them appear to feel hotter than normal beds, however the one i slept on last week did not feel any hotter than a normal mattress. and i know it didn't have any ventilation holes or anything in it because i was looking for a tag on it to find the brand before i left and didn't see any (nor found a tag).

Novafoam 3" topper from Costco. Think I paid around $120 for it on sale.

Upsides: It's very comfortable. It's not super hard like the very dense memory foam. But it's not total mush. It's what a "pillow top" mattress should be like. It recovers well, hasn't turned to total mush after a year, and has given us a bit more life out of a mattress we hated.

It's not hot at all either.

Downsides: It's not a "true" memory foam. It's made up of small capsules that will flake off. Make sure you use a cover for it or else you'll have these gritty small beads all over your bedding. But that is what keeps it cool though. It "breaths" better.

Offgassing. Takes a good 2-3 weeks to really get that chemical stank out of it.

Mattress pad cover & sheets. You are adding another 3" to your mattress. If your original mattress is already tall, adding 3" to it makes it very hard to cover even with extra deep mattress pads. and sheets.

Spoiled. I *HATE* hard beds. I want to pack this with me for vacations because it never fails that we get a room with a bed that could pass for a sheet of plywood. I can't sleep at all on them because I'm so used to my comfy bed at home.

Just buy a memory foam mattress. The 2-3" thick toppers don't really provide the support/feel you might think. I looked at getting the topper and then went into a Mattress Firm store on a whim and purchased an 8" memory foam mattress (Queen) for under $400 total.

You also really should test them out to determine what firmness you want as they having varying degrees.

I actually have a 4" memory foam top and I think it's the best of both worlds.

i just slept on a 2 or 3 inch thick topper and i loved it, so i'm not sure what you mean by it won't provide what i think it will.

i have a good mattress already but it's old and it is definitely sagging a bit. it does have a warranty so i should look into that, however the memory foam topper i slept on was great.

my mom has a membership at costco so i may check that out with her this weekend.

when you buy them from the store, they come in a box right? is it a big box? i'm wondering because i have a smaller sports car and wonder if it will fit in my car heh.

They come rolled up and compressed in a box. You unroll them, cut the plastic cover, and they will expand.

Just bought this Fieldcrest one from Target. Used it for the first time last night. It slept cool and renewed our worn out mattress. Chemical smell isn't too bad after airing out for 24 hours before hand. Only real issue with it is that it is slightly smaller than the mattress.

Obviously can't speak to long term quality but it was comfy. Wife loved it. Will take me a few nights to get used to it though.

I put a 3 or 4" gel memory foam topper on top of my 12" memory foam mattress (also has gel)...bought this setup about 6 months ago...best sleep I have ever gotten...even in the TX summer, it hasn't been hot all for me...

got everything at Sam's just in case it didn't work out...both were serta brand but the topper isn't carried by my local sam's anymore...

When I bought those items, I was able to put the king size mattress (in a box) and the topper in 2013 honda accord coupe...the mattress box was a tight fit in the front passenger seat but I managed with no issues...

We tried a topper from Costco about 3 years ago...may have been Novafoam but I'm not sure. Either way, sucker was hotter than heck so it went back the next day. I even managed to almost stuff it back in the box.

We currently have a Sealy Optimum mattress and have no heat problems with it.

definitely get a 3" at 4lb density. 3lb density is just too soft and giving. i weighed 180 and the 4lb density was perfect. depends how firm you want it to be, you may go up to 5lb density.

I have a 4" myself. its great!

I had a memory foam bed. it got worn out (about 10 years old). I purchased a pillow top bed but it ended up being hard as a rock. so got the 4 inch top. i love it!

yeah that is kind of what i'm wondering about. i have a messed up back so firmer is better in general, but the one i slept on at the beach definitely wasn't TOO firm or anything, and i never woke up with back pains the whole week.
