there were a few threads here recently.

some, including myself, are completely happy with Costco's Novaform mattresses. Haven't had it for a full year, yet. But it has been great.

WalMart makes an ubercheap one that is apparently really-well reviewed, and it doesn't have that chemical smell, supposedly.

And I think you want to favor latex over memory foam.

We bought a memory foam mattress [similar to the one sold in costco - rolled up in a bundle] and hated it simply because the wife and I don't sleep in one position all night long. Memory Foam = a pain in the ass to turn from side to side in the middle of the night. I also noticed an increase in back pain too.

Buy the mattress from a place that will let you return it for a full refund [ie: Costco] in case you don't like it.

I read a comment in internet that memory foam feels warm, so I would also recommend testing it out by laying on floor model for 10 - 15 minutes at least to see if it will be comfortable for you.

Double check the foam weight of the backing foam as well. Some memory foam mattresses have too soft of a backing foam (non memory foam), so that can lead to major sinking into the bed and bad posture.

Memory foam also retains heat very easily. I have a window AC unit keeping the room at 70-72*F and have a fan blowing on me and I still get too hot at times. My matress also has air channels which help, but if you get hot easily while sleeping memory foam will just make it much worse.

Right now I have a memory foam mattress I got off Woot for about $300. Very comfortable, though I got it in winter. Great during that time for the body heat retention, but I'm finding it way too hot for summer use. That being said, I do get hot easily and generate a lot of body heat during the night. I'm still trading it in when my girlfriend moves in for her traditional mattress as I find I sleep at a much more comfortable temperature.

Other random notes: if you order one online, unpack it and let it air out/expand for a few days. It'll get rid of the smell, too. Also, you'll want to either use a solid platform for your bed (such as plates, plywood, etc), or keep your existing box springs. Memory foam matresses need something solid to sit on. Mine works fine on my old box springs.

If you do get one, I'll double coloumb's suggestion and buy one from a place that has a reputable return policy. They're not for everyone.

very important advice. BUT--for COSTCO--get it through Costco online--this will include delivery and far more importantly--home pickup if you want to return it.

memory foam mattresses are a super bitch to move.

for what it's worth, I have no problem turning over in my sleep. Don't even know how that would be possible? :\

I got a good Sealy and it was worth it. Very comfortable sleep. No spring noise.
For reference I have the firmest type they offer. Does NOT feel like a giant sponge.

Yea I got mine from costco.

They do run warmer so if you are a big person or likes it cooler you may not like.

Tempurpedics are way too hot (esp in summer), I went wtih latex foam instead. Latex has holes in it so it's not as hot but still delivers the same support IMO. Back pain went away immediately after switching from my old sagging mattress with springs.

I bought different hardness layers and experimented until I found the right combination for my back, from this site:
http://www.foambymail.com/
Went with King size 3" & 1" Medium talalay for the top (4" total), 1" Soft in the middle. Of course you can buy more or less depending on how firm you like it, the soft layer on the top was actually not giving me the support I needed. I'd recommend at least 4-5 inches on your top layer, especially if you're a side sleeper.

For the base, 6" Lux Firm High Quality from foambymail's wholesale site (www.foamdistributing.com). Grand total before custom built bedframe (really just wooden slats) and mattress cover: $722, cheaper than most and will easily last for more than 10 years.

I got my idea from this forum:

Easily the best discussion regarding memory foam vs latex vs springs, some really knowledgeable people there.
