Memory Errors - causes?

So, I'm not sure if there is correlation here but I thought I'd ask. A thunderstorm rolled by a week or so ago and flickered the power. I have my computer on a pretty nice surge protector though so I thought no worries and left it off till the storm passed. I go to turn it back on and .. just fans spin up and no bios. So I'm diagnosing and I pull out 1 stick of ram and it boots up. It won't boot up with just that other stick.

So one stick dead.. weird. I get it RMA'd through crucial and have it replaced quick enough. But while they were shipping it, the 1 stick that I thought was ok, was still being used to play some games. I kept crashing a few times while referencing memory errors. Sure enough mem test shows this stick is fubared. Looks like another RMA and another shipping charge.

During my diagnosis I pulled the CMOS battery to try and get it boot up and when I had 1 stick of ram off I left bios at default prior to that my RAM was not overclocked prior to this. had it running @667 with a slight overclock to the CPU.

Did the power flicker do this? My surge protector didn't even need to be reset. The rest of my system is fine I think. I can see one stick crapping out after awhile but now the other has problems.

This isn't the first time I've had to RMA this crucial kit either about a month after my build I was getting way to many mem test errors on complete default. (My Original kit was the 10th anniversary stuff, then replaced with regular ballistx which a CS rep said was the same stuff just different heat spreader).

I have one now well one my mom wasn't really using I grabbed it. It's heavy has a back up battery and all that jazz right? I will RMA the other stick just wondering what the "cause" of this problem was for future reference and understanding. I was under the impression that the chances of a power surge knocking out something like this was very unlikely!

Power "flickers" can't kill RAM. It sounds to me like you are trying to run this RAM in a motherboard with either the nVidia 650i chipset or the 680i chipset. If so, sell the RMA'd RAM to someone who has a good non-RAM-killing chipset in their motherboard, and buy yourself some RAM with either Elpida or ProMos IC's on it.

That's what I was pretty sure of, so that's why I'm asking.

]It's an ASUS P5B-Deluxe. I built this system last November when everyone was putting together their OC'd C2D system and lots of people used the P965 and everyone was toting this ram and other D9 micron chipped ram as the best available to use then.

Power flickers can kill RAM. It's happened to me before. I agree that it's not too common though.

I'm running an OC'd Q6600, P5B Deluxe with Crucial Ballistix (anniversary edition) with no problems.

Edit: BTW the P5B is an Intel (P965) chipset. ;)

Actually, power flickers can't kill RAM, as long as said computer is attached to a fully functional surge suppressor, which the OP said he had.

Haven't figured out how linear forums work yet, huh? See, the post below was always posted after the post before it.;)
