memory error

I have been getting this type of error diagonal as indicated in the following for the last several days on my work computer.

iexplore.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0x7e21b5ce" referenced memory at "0x0023431c". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

OK (button) Cancel (button)


These errors seem to generally be manifested when I am in IE but I have seen them occur when I was at other applications.

Is this message being caused by a hardware problem with the memory or is this being caused by some software conflict ?

Could be bad memory, but also could be an application problem.

Have you recently updated ie?

Download & Run memtest, if you get even 1 error with it you have bad ram. If it passes it's a software error.

Quicksilver and Yoxxy are correct, in principle.

If you built your own system, you should've tested the memory thoroughly. If you didn't, you COULD have a hardware problem.

But if you bought OEM, or built and tested your own, memory is a part that exhibits "infant failure." If it's going to fail, it should fail in the first 72 hours of burn-in.

These sorts of error messages may also arise as a result of software programs that conflict or don't play well together.

In that case, you would "Start->Run->MsConfig" and disable your startup programs, enabling and testing by adding one at a time to the enabled-list.

What anti-virus program are you using? Are you using any diagnostic or maintenance program like System Mechanic, which has a service which runs in the background?

What sort of plug-ins had been added to Internet Explorer? Do you, for instance, have additional toolbars -- like Google -- installed? Do you have an ISP which promotes its own access software, and adds plug-ins to INternet Explorer? And I should ask -- what version of IE do you use -- version 6 or version 7?

Do you have a log of recent software installations, such that you could uninstall software added just before and thereafter these problems started to occur?

Did this fault occur after 12th December patches. If so, it appears to be a problem with the "Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP (KB942615)". Let me know and I'll link you the hotfix (for XP SP2 only).
