Nortons has a diagnostic program that checks memory and whole system. I ran this test last night and got a memory error. I am using 3x128 sticks of Crucial 7E memory.

I took out one stick at a time and tried them in every conceivable combination of pairs and slots and as long as I only use 2 sticks in any combination, I don't get a memory error message.

As soon as I put the 3rd stick, no matter which slot or which stick, I get the error message.

Anyone else have Nortons 2001 and tried this? I don't seem to have any system crashes unexpectedly so I think it could be bug a with Nortons.

If the location of the error changes when you rearrange the sticks, then Norton probably found a real error. I'd run MEMTEST86 on it to be sure because it seems to find errors better than anything else, and the newest v 2.5 includes some tests that take several hours.

Sometimes errors are caused by the CPU or 3.3V lines being too low, and some video cards can tax the 3.3V enough to make it droop >10%, especially if the motherboard generates its own 3.3V from the power supply's 5.0V.
