I have a computer for my kids with a motherboard that can use either sdram or ddr memory. I have the sdram. How much of a difference will the ddr make?

Depends on what you do. If you have SDR laying around use it, if you don't, just buy DDR. My guess is if your motherboard is old enough to have both slots, it is not new enough to expose much of a great advantage with DDR.
