SO I got my 4200+ CPU today. I was kind of diappointed it wasn't in the original package even though it said it was "new". Maybe I'm being funny...

Anyway, So I pop it into my sytem that was previous working just fine, 3200+ venice stable at 2.5 with 2 dual channel, matching sets of Kingston HyperX PC 3200 2x256, So I've got a gig of RAM.

So I power up and get the dreaded beeeeep.....beeeeep......beeeeep and a C1h error on my Epox 9npa+ board. Tried reseating them all, nothing. pulled them all out, just slot 1 , long story short I have eliminated all of the sticks of RAM and am stuck with slot 2 being the problem child. I can have memory in 1,3 and 4 and the system POSTs fine, BIOS and windows both see 512 of RAM but CPU-Z sees it in all 3 slots.

Could the memory controller (CPU) be bad or could this slot have been failing all along or is there a setting I have missed?

Oh yeah, and I cleared my CMOS already too.

verify mobo BIOS version and cpu support - what mobo is this?

verify in your mobo manual the dimm config - does not sound positive ...

I have:

EPox 9npa+ Ultra board with the 8.11.06 BIOS (last one)

AMD 4200+ x2 939

2 KHX3200AK2/512 Kingston dual channel 512 kits (2x256) for 1 GB of RAM in all 4 slots.

The only thing that has changed is the CPU, upgraded from a 3200+. The RAM all worked then.

The sticks are now in slot 1 and 3 and 4. If I put anything in slot 2, the system will fail POST. All sticks work in slot 1 alone. all sticks work in slot 1 and 3 in any combination. All sticks work in slot 1,3 and 4 in any combination, EXECEPT the BIOS and windows only recognize 512, CPU-Z sees 768. When I get into windows both CPU cores are present and working.

Shouldn't everything POST with the default BIOS settings?

I'll keep poking around and see what I can find.

I would get into bios, Load bios defaults, back out of bios and on restart get into bios again and go thru it and put my custom settings back in and then re-boot and let the comp load the OS. Which is a long shot but might work.

Other than that, maybe your PSU is not quite upto the task of the new CPU dual core power demands.

Yeah, I was wondering about the power supply too. I haven't found anything on known compatibility issues, so I figured I'd ask here.

Well, on to it

Looks like the power supply just doesn't have enough going for it. Just for giggles I pulled slot 4 with a stick in slot 2 (so 1,2,3) and it POSTed with 768, but couldn't get into windows. Of course I was lucky enough to corrupt my OS, YEAH!!!!!!!

Seriously, that's not a big deal, probably a driver more than the whole OS, since I can still get into safe mode.

But back to the PS, it's a 550w, but only like 18a on the 12v , and 24 on the 5v and 17 amps an the 3v. Inexpensive replacement compared with RAM.
On the plus side, what testing I was able to do got me stable at 2750, cores never got above 42c according to core temp. So with a better supply I should be happy happy.
