'...memory could not be "read"' error message

I've been getting this error message a lot lately:

The instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".

sometimes it (or something similar) would occur when launching programs. now it occured while trying to install 2 different programs. now neither are entirely installed and they're corrupted.

it's a new computer so i'm wondering whether this is a motherboard issue, memory issue or what. anyone know?

i'm not overclocking, btw. but i have experimented with faster memory timings and increasing the FSB. but now i'm using normal and SPD settings.

my system includes a Soyo Dragon Ultra, AthlonXP 1800+ and OCZ PC2400 RAM (running at PC2100 -- i know, i'm a dope).

any thoughts? thanks!

thanks. i tried running memtest86 and it didn't find any errors. i also reseated the memory and it didn't help. any other thoughts? specifically, i was trying to the Java2 SDK (1.3.1_03).

thanks again.

d00t d00t...just had this problem (or one very similar) try running the computer with the case open....mine had to do with the CPU overheating - make sure your temps are ok and you didnt forget your thermal paste (like my idiotic self did...) and if all that is working, then while your computer is on, jiggle your heatsink and fan a bit and see if that triggers the error msg. If it does, then get a better heatsink and fan and some better thermal compound. It worked for me, hope it does for you as well...

thanks, but unfortunately thats not it. i just tried it again with my cpu temp at 38C and still got the same error message.

thanks though.

yes, i have all the latest service packs and critical updates for win2k according to Windows Update.

I also noticed this in the title window: "Application Error" and "Setup: _INS5176._MP". After a few web searches, it seems to be related to InstallShield, which makes sense as I was in the middle of installing something. I tried installing that other program I had trouble with and I got the same exact message.

I just installed InstallShield for MS Visual C++ the other day.... do you think that might have anything to do with this?

Also, is it safe to delete all files in the winnt\temp folder? i found a thread somewhere that suggested trying this to avoid a similar error involved that file and page fault error.

thanks.
