Memory Configuration

Okay, allow me to explain my current setup.

I have an older Gigabyte board and use 2x512 DDR400 stick and 1x256 DDR400 because that's what I had at the time I upgraded, had another 256 stick but the board will not take 4 double sided sticks, doesn't boot.

I'm planning on upgrading to a Gigabyte K8NS 939-Ultra and this is where the confusion kicks in, I'm not sure what the deal is with the memory. This baord will take 1, 2 or 4 sticks, not 3 like my old one, not that it matters.

My original plan was to get another 2x512 DDR400 sticks and run 4x512, the problem is after all the research I've done I've found little concrete eveidence on the speed. I'm not sure if I'll get 400 or 333.

The alternative is stick with the 2x512 and guarntee 400. I don't have the cash for 2x1gb sticks right now so that options out.

Anyway, hoping someone can help me out with a few questions.

Does anyone know what speed 4x512 will run?
If it comes down to it, what's going to be better, 2Gb at 333 or 1Gb at 400

Hope I explained all that okay.

Okay, on further investigation I've come to the conclusion that there is nothing stopping me from running it at 400, it's simply a question of stability and if the board and CPU can handle it.

I read something about it beign a limitaion on the CPU and not the board, I'm not sure if any recent Bios updates have made 4x512 at 400 possible, confused me quite a bit anyway.

Planning on an AMD 64 3200+ venice for my K8NS-Ultra btw.

At this stage it looks like I may simply run 2x512 and save for a couple of 1Gb sticks, that would solve the problem in the long run, nothing wrong with 1Gb for most current gaming for now anyway it would seem, at least I'm guarnteed to be able to run at 400.

With A64, the memory controller is in the CPU. I think the venice core can run 4 dimm at 400, but may revert back to 333 too. But is is not a big deal, because the memory controller is efficient and that would not hurt the performance too much.
