Memory Caps...and how to smash them.

I recently got a Sony VAIO pc with 256MB of RAM. I wanted to install more RAM but found out the system has a memory cap, or limit, of 512MB. But I read online that some people with PCs with memory caps have installed memory that surpassed their limit and the system recognized it and works fine. Has anyone else done this? Is there something that I need to do with the system beforehand, since I'd like to go as high as 768MB... My OS is XP and my motherboard is the P4B-LX
