so I asked you guys about what OS on the laptop, I tried XP it doesn't go though, try 2k it said my hd has bad sector... now I got a 12gb harddrive installed, so I try something else, I install Win ME but then it crashed when installing when I have the extra 256meg ram in the computer, I said screw it I don't know then I removed the ram from the computer and now I got only 30meg ram (2meg video shared).. so I install the damn thing ago, it runs fine... so what's the problem here? the ram?? I know the ram is in good condition.. does it mean my laptop won't take 256meg ram?? I am running now:

cel566 (I will put in a 700 - 900 celeron in later, I found they they use desktop cpu)
32meg ram
12gb hd

Boot with a floppy/CD to a prompt & run fdisk then lowlevel format. It will fix most common disk error.

It could be that your mobo can't take 256 meg stick, but it is highly unlikely for a mobo that can handle a 900mhz chip. Try the mem stick on a differrent laptop to determine if the ram is bad or simply of poor quality & isn't compatible with your mobo.

We could be more helpful if you post the model of your laptop & could also try calling or surf to the manufacture website for help.

hi this is a compaq presario 1200 series 12XL2 model
the specs is:
12" HPA
celeron 566mhz on VIA chipsets
32meg onboard memory + 1 extra slot for extra memory
disc drive is 5gb but has bad sectors like 0.7mb.. low leveled but found no error but when I format it, the bad sectors come out again.
I put in a 12gb now

as for the celeron 566 cpu upgrade.. I take away the keyboard and heatsink and found that it uses the same cpu that I have on my other desktop... I took it out and put it in my dekstop and it works fine.. so I assume it will take a celeron 900 or something right? I think cel900 = 1.7v.. so it should be fine.
