memory and cpu have to match?

Ok this may seem silly to some of you but I don't know? Here is a little background on what I am doing.. I am building a amd box and looking at getting a cpu and memory and I know a xp2700 cpu runs at 333mhz. So then do I have to get pc2700 memory that is the same speed or does that just make it operate better?

What I am asking I guess is, can I use pc3200(400mhz) memory with a xp2700 (333mhz) cpu?
 
ok well what about the other way around what if I have pc2100 memory 266 I think and I still wanna use the xp2700 cpu then what?
