Memory Advice

I am helping a buddy build a new PC for gaming.

He is buying the following CPU and Motherboard. This will not be a super high end gaming PC due to $.

What memory do you all reccomend? We are getting twisted up by the different brands and numbers after the DDR3 (DDR3 PC3-12800). We do not want to buy too much or too little..We WILL NOT be overclocking anything.

ASUS Z97-A
INTEL i5-4690K

I assume he will be going at least 8 GIGs of memory unless you guys suggest otherwise.

OS will be Windows 8.1 and GPU will be at least 2Gigs if not 3Gigs

Thank you in Advance.

Robert

I never heard of that brand but there are very nice reviews on it. I also trust your advice. Thank you for getting back to me.

^ What's your issue? Did you even read them, they are some of the most relevant articles that I have came across and just happened to be posting the prior link and saw a question about it. TBG is one of several tech sites (including AT) which I follow regularly.

Because it looks like SPAM. You have it in your sig. And you've already posted it as a new post which also looks like SPAM.

8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz (DDR3-12800), 1.5V, main timings or 1866MHz at 10/11 timings, if reasonable. Else, 1600MHz at 10/11. If trying to keep costs within reason, don't sweat the 2% slower it might be in some random game than some expensive uber-RAM; but also don't get CAS 11 RAM if CAS 9 costs basically the same.

If not overclocking, get an H97 board and the non-K chip. Z97 with the i5 K is 100% for overclocking. That is, except for the i7-4790K, and/or if you will be buying from Microcenter, in-store.

if your paying the extra for overclockable parts its well worth the little bit extra to get faster ram as it can boost cpu performance 15% in games vs 1600c9
its just that most games dont need a faster cpu so most ram reviews being gpu bottlnecked show no performance gain

AVEXIR Blitz 2400 c10 $76

for a gaming pc the gpu is where you want to spend the most money
so aim for non overclockable pc with gtx970
or maybe a overclockable pc with a lower gpu but upgrade the gpu sooner and keep the rest of the system longer

THANK YOU!

Ok we talked and we are now going to OverClock with these pieces

ASUS Z97-A
INTEL i5-4690K

We want 8 GIGs what is the best recommendation now? I see faster memory might be beneficial if we OC.

We are most likely going to go with this unless someone smarter than me, haha which you all are says NO WAY 🙂

And we will be ordering from Newegg so please share links 🙂 Thanks again for everyone's help.

looks like a good value kit to me
not as fast as 2133c9 or 2400c10 but then its cheaper

so your getting a aftermarket hsf to oc it? as running the cpus memory controller above its rated 1.5v 1600mhz may increase its heat output a little

looks like its dropped in price
G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) F3-2400C10D-8GZH $64

good value hsf that should be nice for a nice 24\7 oc
Or just to have, period. That's about as cheap as most 8GB 1600MHz kits have been for the last half a year, and you know it will run fine at 1.5V and 1600-1866MHz. That was one of the good things about XMP, that bascially all XMP-supporting RAM has JEDEC specs it will automatically run at if you turn XMP off, with no manual settings.
