it pops up every once in a while. there were a couple deals on black friday/cyber monday. keep an eye on fatwallet & slick deals. it can be had for $35 AR on a daily basis though.

2GB.....seriously, i used 32bit and 64bit of both xp and vista ultimate....they both run just fine on 2GB. in fact, i threw in my 2x512MB set for a total of 3GB...didnt really make a difference, but it made my computer feel a bit sluggish (damn amd 2T command rate - oh well). other then that, there was no difference...

Thats superfetch, and if your memory usage gets high enough windows simply dumps the superfetched memory.

No, thats used RAM... 1.3GB is used by programs and vista. 2.7 is used by superfetch. It is clearly labeled as such!

Id love to know what youre running, because im using 1.1GB right now with IE and 6 tabs open, AIM, Windows Media Player playing an MP3, and the task manager, and the resource manager...

well, I closed everything and dropped to 1.09GB... 210MB less... still 550MB for vista is ridiculous. 1.1 to 1.3 is a much more realistic figure.

Except, If you are running vista with 1 GB of ram then it automatically disables AERO and all other graphical features and goes down to about 550MB... now that I think about it. but with 4GB it fully stretches its legs and takes 1.1 to 1.3 gigs. (assuming a few background processess like anti virus and stuff).

I think the reason I am taking 1.1 now isntead of 1.3 is because I have moved to ESET antivirus instead of pc cillin security suite.

I dont run an AV. Thats probably part of the discrepency.

I was talking bare windows without any programs running @ startup.

Bare windows includes anti virus, daemon tools, and and all the driver suites...

Otherwise you are cheating... Nobody runs a computer with no driver suites... heck even My bare minimum is was less then the average user has (Who is has about 20 icons in his system tray).

I shouldn't have to turn off my anti virus program and printer driver to have enough ram to run a game.

IF you want the smallest boot ram usage then give me some time with vlite / nlite and I will make a stipped down copy of windows where NOTHING works but takes only 200mb of ram... thats a pointless exercise though. A functionaly system has all the drivers installed, all the default stuff, probably aero, and usually an anti virus suite.
