This is what I use, and it seems to work:

Repeat the items to be remembered until you can repeat them without reference to the source. Repeat several times without the source.

Do something else for about 5 minutes. Go back, and repeat the items you've just learned until you recall them all, fluently and with no errors.

Do something else for 15 minutes. Repeat as above.

Then repeat at 1 hour, 4 hours and 1 day later.

Repeat twice-daily for the next week.

Writing things down also helps.
Example for school: Write down the notes in class, but then go back and rewrite the main ideas when you study. It'll also help memorization because you have to go over the stuff more than once.
And like Mark R said, go over it repeatedly to make sure you can remember it even after some time has passed.
