Picked up a 50 pack of Memorex Cd-rs from Best Buy today.
17.99-8 MIR. I needed some 80 minute ones and these were the right price.
They are white on top and have a green tinge on the recording side...and smell like bad chemicals...
My question is, are they any good? Most other other ones I use, like TDK, have a blue color to them...
Is there a CD-R ID program somewhere that tells you where they were made/quality etc?

cd's are cd's

there's no way to tell where or how well they were made, but i've always had good luck with memorex
also, the bottom color is not really important, some are green, some are blue

It's the volatile portion of the lacquer vehicle. It outgasses for a considerable time after the application at the factory. This is normal.

Cheers!

there is a program called CD-R Identifier...i don't have a link, but if you search for it on the forums you will find a link...it will tell you the manufacturer and dye type and some other info...its freeware...

I've had terrible luck with Memorex myself... 4 out of 10 were bad burns. In contrast, some cheap ones I bought for half the price all worked great, so who knows? :)

yes these are what appear to be some of the best ones. I've NEVER burned a coaster period when it comes to CDR's, though the higher the quality, the longer the data will last (in years), and the higher the likelyhood that you'll be compatable with all audio CD players (which sometimes have cheap playback mechanisms).

Budman....LOL! ROFLMAO! I was thinking the same darn thing when I read your post!

Anyway, I have the exact same product you just bought...the 50-pack...same label and green color...and I got it at BESTBUY! You aren't in Texas, are you? ;) I've never had a problem with them. I burn at 12x. Done data, music, backups, disc to disc all that stuff, no coasters. Just my $.02. BTW, do you shop at The Forum or on 410?

CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs probably smell from the clear Lexan plastic, a material considered potentially harmful to children if used for drink containers because it's not very inert.

<< cd's are cd's >>

Ding dong you're wrong.

Man, is the earth still flat?

<< there's no way to tell where or how well they were made >>

Where did you come up with that one? Yes, there is!

1 - either by general concensus or by cumulative anecdotal experiences (of which, ironically, I wouldn't put much faith in considering the forum we're in - many inexperienced and uneducated people here making blanket statements of personal experiences transcending the end-all-be-all of cdr media without doing a shred of research - whether personal or industry-wide)

2 - general concensus re: manufacturer or OEM factory. If you get any cdr analysis program like cdridentifier or cdrdiagnostics et al, then you can find out with some certainty the factory that the particular cdr in question was made.

If the results scream RITEK, CMC MAGNETICS OR GIGASTORAGE among others then you can make certain assumptions on their "quality" just like you can somewhat assume that Mercedes Benz, BWM, Lexus ... make great cars. A car is not a car right? A cdr is not a cdr. Let's put this to rest once and for all. BTW, anyone remember or even heard that Ritek's rights to produce cdr media has been either totally revoked or seriously come unto review a couple of months ago. Mostly because of their terrible track record for quality? I posted it and got almost zero response. Anyone see the irony here?

Okay, i'm gonna say this again. Listen up

[rant on]

Just because a particular piece of media burned for you does not allow you to make generalized claims for that particular media in question. It may have worked for your particular setup. If your setup is good then it will probably be more forgiving of bad media. The proper way to address this is to say "XXX media burned well for me in the past. It has shown no dataloss over time and has transcended every reader it has come across" That is not to say that another person will not have problems with that particular cdr, of which happens all the time. You always here "X media sucked!" and then here next in the thread "X media is great!"

Some media manufacturers are better than others. Over time and experience this has come to pass as true unequivocably. Just like better car manufacturers will overall have better cars and higher driver satisfaction. That is not to say that a cheaper priced car from a less regarded manufacturer is not allowed to be decent ... however, the assumption still stands.

There is no "best color" per se. It all depends. So, using some argument that X color is better than X color is pure BS. It all depends. A good manufacturer of something X color will have good results over a crap manufacturer of X-better color. Got it?

Another example: Kodak Pthalocyanine type 5 dye cdrs are awesome. CMC Magnetics Pthalocyanine type 8-9 are problematic. Just because they are PC does not make them equal. The difference in quality cdr engineering and production of Kodak is what sets it apart from CMC Mag.

[rant off]

In any case, i'm not trying to slam anyone in particular ... but let's be more educated about this topic just like anything else that comes up in AT. Wouldn't it burn your chaps if you still saw people running around saying that "the Earth is flat" and "64megs of RAM is good enough for PhotoShop 6"?

Thank you.

Someone said the earth is flat in the 500 post long thread about SCSI vs Ide :( So I guess I can say "speak of the devil"
