I recently build a new computer and had it running fine for two weeks using my old Plextor 12/10/32A burner. Two days ago I went to Best Buy and bought a Maxtor 120GB drive and a Memorex 52/24/52 burner. I reinstalled Windows XP on the new hard drive.
I then had a read error with the new Memorex cd-rom and windows became corrupted. I went to reformat and reinstall and the computer had read errors with the memorex drive trying to install windows. It works fine with my Plextor. Again, last night I tried using the Memorex drive to install UT2003. It made it through the first disc but had a read error on the second disc and Windows became corrupted again and wouldn't boot.
I realized I was using an 80 pin IDE cable and switched to a 40 pin IDE cable but still I had a read error when trying to copy files over. This whole time my Plextor drive (slave on the same cable as the Memorex) has worked fine.
My question is: is there a known issue/setting with these Memorex 52/24/52 drives that I may have wrong or is this just a bad drive that I need to return for a different drive?
Thanks for the help!
