ick - drive not recommended...I think there's a free after rebate drive available at OM this week that might be a little better, I don't know.

do NOT buy this CD ROM. I bought one about last September. Not read very good, the worst is it make a lot of noise ( I mean when it runs normal ). Returned and buy a Kenwood Truex 72, very nice CD rom, fastest for gaming.

As joefart pointed out, the Memx 48x promotion has expired, but Staples has a $20 rebate going for the Delta 50x

Drive

Rebate

Still, your best bet would be to pick up one of those free after rebate 50x drives at Office Max.

Staples has always sent me e-mail confirmation that they received my rebate request. This usually happened within 4 weeks of sending in the rebate. It still takes quite a bit longer to get the actual rebate, but at least you can check it online, via the provided link in the e-mail confirmation. If you haven't heard "one peep," you should probably investigate this.

BTW, Staples is not bad on rebates, the big stink-aroo right now is the infamous Quantum rebate mess. Quantum sucks at rebates.

Not sure if this is covered in other forums, but why not just use a cdrw as your main cd drive? Musta read thousands of CDs with my HP and it still has no trouble burning good copies.

The Memorex cdrom drive is good enough...my only complain abt it is that it's too noisy. I got this drive several months ago fm Staples with the rebate.

Techie...per experience, the Afreey drive(Prime Peripherals) is a lot better than the Delta drive. Bought these drives when they were both on sale two weeks ago...returned the Delta drive and keep the Afreey.

The Delta drive was making a lot of clanking/strange sound, something I have not heard with other cdrom drives.

Yeah, I got this drive about a month ago for free through the mp3software thingie:

48x 55-30 MIR
Software 30-30 MIR
Homeworld 20 - 10 MIR
---------------------
$110 (inc tax) - (30 + 30 + 10)MIR - 30 (off 100 Coupon) = $10

Haven't opened it up, because I'm not sure if I want to use it or sell it. I'd think it'd be great for my next computer: CDRW + CD + DVD drives mean that you could do just about anything you want at any time.

Not sure of any coupons that are also available, but you can probably do a similar deal with some other software too. Anyone?

Have a Delta 50x that died after a month. BUT, I took it apart, separated and then reconnected all the connectors and the thing has been working fine now for 2 months.

Regarding the Prime Peripherals drive (Afreey when I got one months ago), I find it a very nice drive (although it's siting around as an extra drive now).

I like my 48X Memorex better, but the Afreey isn't that bad/loud.

On the other hand, the Delta sounds like a banshee out of hell.

Most all of these high speed IDE drives are on the noisy side, it's somewhat inherent to their speeds. But some drives, for which you will pay a lot more than Free or $20, are less noisy. I've always had good luck with Asus, Toshiba, and Teac drives, but you're gonna pay close to $50, or more, for one. At that point, you might as well spend an extra $15 and get a DVD-ROM instead.

I have one of these. It's really noisy. But it's better than a 8x that works 25% of the time. I think I might get the OM one just to see if it's any less quit.
