Looks good, rich and vibrant with japanese culture. ;)

Director: Rob Marshall (Chicago, 2002)
Release date: Dec. 9th 2005
Zhang Ziyi (Rush Hour 2, Hero, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon)
Michelle Yeoh (CTHD)
Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai)

Based on the international best-seller by Arthur Golden, "Memoirs of a Geisha" is an epic story of love and betrayal set against the broad and rapidly changing social canvas of 20th century Japan. Nine-year old Chiyo, a poor fisherman's daughter, is taken from her family and sold to a geisha house. From her start as a common household maid, she blossoms into one of Kyoto's most renowned geishas, surviving the envy and treachery of the competition.

I just started reading the book today. Very immersive, I cannot put the book down.

I agree. Its a very good read. I remember Madonna wanting to be the main character. That would have been a travesty.

You must be joking. Zhang Ziyi is ASIAN. Madonna is WHITE.

A white person cannot play a japanese character growing up in a small fishing village in japan during 20th century.

Why don't you might as well cast Matt Damon as Kunta Kinte in Roots?

Any asian can play a japanese character
Any caucasian can play a british/irish/german/italian character

She supposedly wanted to play her though.

wtf i wasn't implying that Madonna should be cast in the role. zhang ziyi is a fine actress and i'm sure she won the job because of her skills, but looking at the movie posters and trailers, i just don't see her as being japanese. that's all.

Get ready for them to screw the hell out of the movie. Hope you enjoy the book. :D

And I totally support Madonna in that roll. Haven't you seen Beverly Hills Ninja?

Quoted for the most ignorant ATOT quote of the day.

Why? If you saw a few east asian people on the street, could you tell who was chinese, japanese, and korean?

Having grown up around Japanese, Koreans and Chinese, I myself can say yes in most instances. I doubt a majority of people may be able to tell the difference though.

I noticed you edited your thread to say in looks because saying Japanese=Korean=Chinese is like saying German=French=Italian which is plain stupid.

Being Korean myself, I can defintely say that while you can tell the difference, there are always Chinese people who look Korean, Koreans who look Japanese, Japanese who look Chinese, etc. etc. And when you concede that the majority of people cannot tell the difference, that all that means is that whether the actress is Chinese/Japanese/Korean really doesn't matter if she is playing a Japanese woman

Yes, but you didn't state that in your thread. You just said J=K=C.

It was in response to someone who was making a big deal out of the fact that a Chinese woman playing a Japanese woman

As much as I love Ziyi, she's probably going to be about as convincing as:

1.) Harrison Ford as a Russian in K-19
2.) Arnold as a Russian in Red Heat

Take your pick.

tho the main character isn't even japanese and the dialogue is in english, i'd still see it just to see how well they bring the book to the screen.

i love the book too and i will definitely go see the movie. however, i am disappointed that the main actress is chinese instead of japanese. it just takes away the authenticity of it...

I worship Zhang ZiYi, but I have to also agree that having her play a Japanese girl is disappointing.

I'm still going to shell out money to see my honey, though! :p
