It was a great book. I hope they do a good job translating it to the silver screen.
A book about Geishas' squabling over men? Now a movie. Cant wait. It would be better if they had men play the parts and turn into a gay movie.

Is that movie in japanese or english? btw, choosing Zhang Ziyi is probably a better decision for the film if it want to go international. Zahng Ziyi is probably better known internationally than any current japanese actress.

Whats with all the chinese actresses playing japanese roles.

Apparently, they couldn't find japanese actresses who are both qualified and willing to take the roles.

The Chairman - Ken Watanabe (an excellent choice!)
Sayuri - Zhang Ziyi (hmm..they better maker her look really humble)
Hatsumomo - Gong Li (good choice, she's got that bitch look)
Mameha - Michelle Yeoh (hmm...Maggie Cheung would've been a better choice)
Pumpkin - Youki Kudoh (she does have that "inferior" competitor look)
Nobu - Koji Yakusho (duno any of this guy's work)

the only real objection I have is Michelle Yeoh as Mameha, and I'm a little iffy about Zhang Ziyi as Sayuri, she doesn't strike me as a humble Sayuri type...if anything they should've casted unknowns for all the parts (tho I do think Watanabe for Chairman is a perfect choice)...but this is Hollywood, no doubt they worry about the numbers and no doubt established celebrity names will help bring more of an audience, regardless of how out in left field the casting choices may be...sad but true...

"Zhang, 25, has been working to perfect her English for several years and now speaks the language with little difficulty."

"Ken Watanabe, an Oscar nominee for ?The Last Samurai,? will portray the Chairman, a high-powered executive with whom Sayuri falls in love."

Sweet!

Youki Kudo is a cutie.

If you haven't checked her out, you should see her in Mystery Train.
