I moved my 4890 to the secondary system after having upgraded to a 460 1GB. On a lark, I decided to check out the GPU temps on the 4890 with GPU-z since I had been using CCC to check temps before. This is for a Sapphire 4890 Vapor-X 1GB, not the OC edition and not OC'd by me.

GPU-z temps after about an hour of gaming:

Core 82C
DispIO 82.5C
MemIO 106.5C
Shaders 93.5C

Even at idle, the high MemIO temp remains and even the core temp isn't great:

Core 56C
DispIO 56C
MemIO 74C
Shaders 61.5C

Even with the fan set to 100%, the MemIO still hits 97.5C

Could this be a problem with the seating of the cooler on top of the chip? I still use the 4890 system for some gaming if the main rig is chewing through some video encoding so the temps are worrisome.

I sent this info to Sapphire and their response was (to paraphrase): Sweet jesus! Send it back to us!

Glad they are going to take care of you.

I had a Toxic 4870 overclocked to 820MHz on the core. It had much the same cooler, the vapor chamber, though with a few heat pipes (I think the Vapor-x did not have those). I think I ever saw 60C on that card, but it's been a while.

So basically I had a slightly different cooler on a slightly different GPU with a hazzy memory. I've probably been no real help.
