Now have a single stick of 512mb samsung pc2700,to replace my 2 256mb
of pc2100; can I set the bios to run this memory at 166mhz even though
my cpu; athlon xp2100 locked is running at 133mhz? Or will it only work
efficiently when I replace my cpu(maybe next month).

the results of using the faster ram will be nill if you're using a lower fsb memory. you can set it to run faster, and you won't have any problems, it just won't do you any good. Your better bet is to put the newer 2700 in, take out all the old memory, run it at 133mhz and then run it at all the most aggressive timings, which it should handle no problems. Therefore you will gain more speed by pushing it at 2100 then running it at 2700 speeds

Ya kinda lost me with your responce there stonecold,or maybe you didn't
understand my question. In a perfect world one would buy memory,AND cpu
that run at the same speeds AT the same time;however the mrs. only allows me a couple hundred a month to "play" with. Next month or so I will get
a new Faster cpu which will match the speed of the memory{2700}that I
already have.It seems like you got the impression I was trying to run
both the 2100 and the 2700 mems in the same machine;[see replaced].
My question is will I see ANY kind of boost with this new memory with
bios properly set,or am I not to expect anything until the new cpu arrives.

Running the memory at a faster clock than the CPU is perfectly fine. I'm running dual channel PC2700 with an XP1800+

There's no reason your memory bus has to match the FSB. P4's have been on a different bus speed since day one.

Well, actually yes! and with my air filtration system, can of tuna, duct
tape, and plastic sheeting; I can stay {plugged-in} 20 minutes longer than you.
