So, I now know why some moterboards come with a PCI-E molex power connector. My motherboard is an Asus P6X58D Premium and I'm running 3 GTX 580s in SLI. The system has been going strong for 6 months until this happened.
The motherboard is fine with zero damage. I went ahead and purchased a new AX1200. This time before hooking it up I went ahead and soldered on my own 12V aux power connector. I'm not the first person running SLI where this has happened, so I was able to find a guide.
I thought I was immune to the problem. I guess not
