Mel Gibson's "The Passion" - Sleeper Hit Movie of 2004?

American audiences do not generally like subtitled movies

I didn't see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in the theaters...was it dubbed there?

nope!

i'd see it.

i heard it wasnt going to have subtitles.
mel gibson was very adamant about that when i read the article in nyt magazine about it.

but...
maybe things changed (although, according to nyt magazine, mel gibson's biggest enemy appears to be change)

It was not dubbed, was fine with subtitles, and did very well in the U.S. theaters.

it's in aramaic (making subtitles mandatory as nobody speaks it anymore)

my pastor got to go to a sneak preview for clergy so Gibson could get feedback and said it was tough to watch, but very good.

I heard Gibson backed off and will add in subtitles. I also heard it'll be 4 hours long. :Q

It sounds interesting. I thought I read they weren't going to have subtitles though?

Then honestly nobody would see it here in the U.S.

::shrug:: I don't think Mel Gibson was shooting for a blockbuster hit anyway. It sounds more like an art film than anything else. I remember reading an article some time back about it and it was supposed to depict the last 36 hours of Jesus' life, with all dialogue in Aramaic and Latin, no subtitles. I guess the idea is that you just watch what's going on and not be distracted by dialogue. Beats me. I imagine there will probably be controversy over it and that will get people into the theaters as it is, not to mention the fact that Mel Gibson is directing it.

Right, but I don't even think it would do well in art houses without some sort of translation on or near the screen

think its going to be good. he cast the perfect actor IMO to play Christ (James Caviezel) and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene is a nice touch. And Mel hasnt let me down yet with his directorial efforts (Man w/o a Face grew on me eventually, and Braveheart...all i can say is DAMN!)

All I've heard so far is that there has been a lot of division, backlash and condemnation with the people involved and many not involved in this movie.

What else has Jim Caviezel been in? I only heard of him from Count of Monte Cristo (great flick which he did a good job in). I've heard he's very Christian and of course he has the same initials. 😀

In any case, I'd definitely like to see this when it comes out. Braveheart was very powerful, and I'm sure this will be even more so.

Anyone know if this movie actually follows the Bible? The trailer looks pretty accurate, but I'm not sure if this will be one of those Jesus Christ Superstar interpretations or not.

I don't see how this will be the sleeper hit...it might not play at 3000 theaters across the nation, but I'm sure most people will at least hear buzz about it.

Nothing concrete has been said about the subtitles yet, and I don't think Gibson will necessarily "cave" on his decision...there's nobody to cave to! This is HIS project, and he's got balls to be doing this...all just because he is extremely religious, and wants a movie done "right". I like him as an actor, but this makes me respect him soooooo much more. And yeah, it's going to be in aramaic (sp...?) and latin, which will be kick ass, even tho no one will understand it. That, being the point...so that you concentrate on the movie and visuals, and just get a "tone" of the conversations through inflection and whatnot.

Can't wait.

Count was a great movie. he was also in Angel Eyes, Pay It Forward (the homeless guy with the drug addiction), Thin Red Line and Frequency. Count is prolly my favorite out of the bunch, but if you look at the guy, he looks perfect for the role. And yes, he is a devout Catholic, so he can put forth his full faith and effort into his performance.
