Mel Gibson was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in Malibu, Calif. early this morning for suspicion of DUI. Bail was set at $5,000.

He was pulled over for speeding in his 2006 Lexus as he was heading eastbound on the Pacific Coast Highway and a Breathalyzer test was administered. The arrest report lists the time of arrest as 2:36AM and the time booked as 4:06AM. Gibson was released at 9:45 a.m.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Country Sheriff's Department told TMZ, "Mel Gibson was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was released later this morning. The investigation was still ongoing, just like it would be with any other person."

A sheriff's official told TMZ Gibson had a blood alcohol level of .12. The legal limit in the state of California is .08.

I could be wrong, but I thought he was a recovering alcoholic. Did he fall off the wagon?

Yep, he's off the wagon.

He won't get treated like any other ordinary joe blow.

He'll go to Re-hab and get off with a slap on the wrist.

No, he drove there. Guess he's still human, regardless of the movie.

I liked him better in his film version of Hamlet.

It's called taking the initiative to disgrace any object remotely tied in with religion.

As for the subject at hand, it's not a surprise. Because a person is rich and famous does not make them holy, or above every day stupidity such as drugs. In fact, considering the percentages of drug abuse in Hollywood, I?d say I expect it from any one of them.

I like how he was pulled over for speeding and probably not showing any signs of impairment at the wheel (swerving, reaction time, etc).

a) That's sheer speculation on your part.

b) Once he was pulled over for a lawful reason, the police were justified in observing his bearing, speech, and whether he had bloodshot eyes or smelled of alcohol. Them's the breaks.

Meh. .12 is a little much in my opinion. I think the legal limit should be a .12, so I guess that in my perfect world...he would have still gotten a DUI.

It wasn't that long ago that .12 was well within the legal limit almost everywhere.

Actually I don't think .12 was ever within the legal limit anywhere since the advent of the Breathalyzer. It was formerly the case in most jurisdictions that the legal limit was .10, but I have never heard of a jurisdiction with a legal limit greater than .12. That would have to have been a long time ago. .12 is clearly, IMO, an unsafe level for driving purposes.

All he has to do is ask for the source code to the breathalyzer and he will get off scott free.

You're dating me, but I do remember .15 as being prevalent in the late seventies-before the advent of MADD. But back in those bad old days, I also remember driving through Tennessee and stopping at a GAS station that had a soda vending machine converted to beer cans. And Texas allowed open containers of alcohol in motor vehicles. Fortunately, things have changed.

A blitzed Mel Gibson launched into an obscenity-laced tirade when he was busted on suspicion of drunken driving early yesterday, threatening an officer and making anti-Semitic and sexually abusive remarks, according to a police report.

The "Passion of the Christ" director repeatedly said, "My life is f----d," according to the report by Los Angeles County Deputy James Mee, which was obtained by TMZ.com. The celebrity news Web site posted excerpts of the handwritten report...

According to the incident report obtained by TMZ.com, the Road Warrior embarked on a belligerent, anti-Semitic outburst when he realized he had been busted.

"F-----g Jews. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," Mee's report quotes him as saying.

"Are you a Jew?" Gibson asked the deputy, according to the report.

The actor also berated the deputy, threatening, "You motherf----r. I'm going to f--- you," according to Mee's report.

The actor also told the cop he "owns Malibu" and would spend all his money "to get even with me," Mee said in his report.

TMZ quoted a law enforcement source as saying Gibson noticed a female sergeant on the scene and yelled at her, "What do you think you're looking at, sugar t--s?"

Deputy Mee then wrote an eight-page report detailing of the incident, but higher-ups in the sheriff's department felt it was too "inflammatory" to release and would merely serve to incite "Jewish hatred," TMZ said.

The legal limit in the state of California is .08.

.12 is far from blasted probably had two glasses of wine.

The limits are way too low. There was a bar in San Luis Obispo calls Bulls that had a breathlyzer in there and I could be almost sober ~1-2 beers and blow .08.. after about 7 I'd blow 2.0ish.... and still drive surf etc whatever fine...With scotch the effects were even worse one shot put you over the limit.
