Company i work for has three diff levels of health insurance, bronze , silver , and gold
Within each category there us a sub option to have basic insurance with no access to a major health network and its affiliates or access to everyone.

The prices to include everyone are very expensive, 77 per two week paycheck for the best coverage with full access to no cost at all for the worst coverage

Im thinking about biting the bullet and getting best option as the health provider omitted is one of the best in the country...just sucks because basically it amounts to a 5 % loss in take home pay......

Fuuuuu!!!

What do you guys do? Im pondering full access with medium benefits as its cheaper..

Young and healthy butni have a very very active lifestyle

$77 every 2 weeks is expensive? I was paying $148 a week but now we use my wife's insurance, her employer covers most of it so we pay less for better insurance. $77 every 2 weeks is a bargain for good coverage.

$77 just for me seems expensive

heheh

for the most part the two levels are identical, it's just that out of pocket for the gold plan is 10% and the silver is 20%

It's a difference of $77 every two weeks or $7.50 every two weeks.

And also the Gold plan has better out of network costs but I almost always stay away from that if at all possible.

yearly out of pocket max silver is $1,250 and gold is $500

ER silver is $125
ER gold is $100

inpatient outpatient prof. services/surger/inpatient facility servies/other outpatient services/therapy services, etc. etc. etc.
10% gold covered expenses after deductible
20% silver covered expenses after deductible

prescription drugs

same cost both plans
$10 gneric
$25 preferred
$40 non-preferred

$195 per year for silver health insurance vs

$2015 for gold health insurance

is the cost worth it when I'm only making 35k per year.... Im having a hard time saying yes :(

Mine is free for me, the city pays it. My wife pays $360 a month for her and our daughter on hers.

if you don't like the price now, just wait, it goes up every year no matter what. And, if you're lucky like I am, they increase price and start taking away features.

If I'm reading this right, you'd be silly not to take the silver, and both are good coverage.

Worst case scenario(big horse pistol bills), with the silver, you pay $195 in premiums and then $1,250 oop(deductible + coinsurance) and are out $1345, plus any copays for pharm or ER.

Gold you are paying $2,015 up front just for premiums.

You can't have your family on your insurance? Or is hers just better?

It's cheaper. If I put them both on mine it would be a bit over $600 a month. Her's is ~$160 a month for her. To put my daughter on mine it would be $300, or $460 combined. Both on her's is $360 so it saves us about $100 a month. Coverage wise they are pretty much the same.

Wow, does the family coverage add a lot, or what?

Mine covers just me, and the weekly deduction is $15/wk, Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

$22 per 2-week paycheck for me. I'm not sure what it is for a family but it's certainly not $300+, that's quite a bit. I think it's more like $60-70.

I'm up to $82 every two weeks for ours. My wife had some health problems this year though so they ended up paying out considerably more than we paid into it.

I wonder how it would change the healthcare debate if the general public knew how expensive the full price for insurance is? My wife's COBRA (the full group rate premium) was around $550 a month, for just her.

Ok, lets try some numbers:
* Likely case, you use no medical care in the year: Silver $195, gold $2015.

* Another likely case, you use $500 of medical care in a year: Silver $195 + $500 * .2 = $295, gold = $2015 + $500*.1 = $2065.

* What about a terrible, catastrophic case: Silver you pay $195 + $1250 = $1445, gold you pay $2015 + $500 = $2515.

In no possible case is gold the better option.

Also, last I looked, BCBS had monthly rates of about $36 per person (in case you wanted the cheapest possible alternative). Of course, that cheap BCBS plan doesn't cover much other than catastrophic diseases, but isn't that what insurance really is for?

But, I still don't see you getting much better than that silver option anywhere.

this is my same exact thing after looking into it more.... They have seminars coming up and I'm going to attend and ask them the very same question.

I'm so lucky I live in Canada where everyone has free healthcare and doesn't have to go broke paying for insurance.

He never mentioned if deductibles are the same. On our plan deductibles don't count against your out of pocket maximum.
