If the phone company starts to lose money because more people are getting cells instead of landlines, should they go cry to the government to make cell phones illegal?

Lulz.

Here's the analogy you attempted to make:
Phone Co: We're offering landline service for X price.
Consumer: Screw you. I'm going with a competing service.

Here's your analogy that actually describes piracy:
Phone Co: We've offering landline service for X price.
Consumer: Screw you. I'm not paying you anything, but I'll use your service anyway.

The RIAA, MPAA are antiquated companies, they need to change their ways, or fold, like any other company. Companies need to evolve if they want to stay in business, not cry to the government to change the environment for them.

Piracy, counterfeiting, and other violations of IP rights is a problem that is much bigger than the RIAA and the MPAA. Indeed, it's probably one of the most pressing economic problems that the West faces today. If you have a plan for companies to "evolve" such that they can recoup their investment on a creative work and make a profit in an environment where their work is distributed to anyone who wants it free of charge with no strings attached, be sure to publish it. There's a Nobel prize with your name on it if your plan actually works.

Throw out the baby with the bathwater.

I applaud our government overlords for the lordship.

MegaUpload via MegaVideo was filled with hundreds if not thousands of pirated TV shows episodes and movies, I should know, since I use to watch them on it. This is a sad day?

you mean like, suing pirates, enabling drm, and trying to pass legislation to slow online piracy?

Or changing their models so they can offer their product in the same medium that pirated stuff is delivered, actually giving a cut to the artists, as two examples. Lot of people pirate simply because they refuse to give money to the bastards because of the shit they pull off.

Which means people will pirate anyways b/c there are already mediums that provide digital formats of music, movies and software.

Sad that your parents didn't raise you properly. Keep making up excuses for stealing. You wouldn't go into a store and steal it but b/c it's easy to do it from home, it's okay.

You think I would have payed for any of the albums and movies I downloaded? LOL! I just wouldnt have watched them in the first place... Its hilarious how these companies claim they lost a 500 million or whatever, they didnt lose shit, and in fact piracy is a great promoter, since guy downloads album > tells everyone about it > new fans are created > more sales

I know this for a fact because Ive been responsible for it quite a few times... told a bunch of people about underground metal bands they would never have heard about, they became huge fans, bought all their stuff

Legitimate MP3 sales with no DRM have existed for years now. What more should they do?

There's a very simple solution to the piracy problem and it wouldn't cost them a dime. Quite making <insert noun of choice here>. Problem solved.

If that happened what would we do?? you ask. Well, that's the funny part. The human race adapts.

Oh, you forgot the most often used reason for pirating. Why pay for it when I can just pirate it?

Steam figure it out why can't the rest them do the same. If you do killer deals like steam then maybe they would have made more money then trying to bully everyone with outrageous fines. I bought a lot of games on steam that I won't even play. Some of the games on there are now making money again because of steam. How bout the RIAA and MPAA do the same they rather play mafia and bully everyone and pay off the government.

@ Dr Pizza calling me a Pirate FU prove that I am a pirate. You say you did not even know they deleted the files when people reported links this clearly shows you have no clue on the subject of Megaupload.

How about we post some links to movies and music downloads here. What do you admins do you delete the posts and ban the user. Megaupload was doing the same thing so what is be the difference. The government arresting them was out of line. They are not even in this country.

I'm pretty sure that Megaupload actually hosts the infringing content (they're not just some blog with assorted download links), and everything I'm reading is saying that they had a ton of servers in Virginia.
