ATOT pool on how high it will go!

EDIT: Chances of winning the jackpot are 1 in 175,711,536.

Still not positive expected value 🙁 (present value + tax effect)

EDIT: ONE WINNER IN NEW JERSEY. WHAT A LUCKY BASTARD.

i got an idea. just turn over everything, the pot, whatever monehy the states would have made, everything and donate it all to New Orleans. 😉

why dont the people who have all this money and are giving it awya to the lucky lottery winners KEEP IT.. ITS LIKE A BAJILLION DOLLARS!!! hijack it and go make a statue to remember Zelda!!! sheish

As much as I would love to win it, I think that someone who spent their last $5 on some quick picks in NO deserves it more than I do. I mean you could question why they're buying a quickpick with no money left, but it's probably out of hope and at least it could be delivered on. Though I'm unsure as to whether or not NO is part of it.

because it's run by the state or states.

it is just another form of taxation. except the entitlements are handed out in the form of lottery checks. of course the state keeps a percentage of the money coming in to fund projects and such.

so why doesnt the state keep it and give money to new orleans or all of those poor people in chicago and other cities and all of those crappy schools that cant even afford chalk then giving it away randomly to people who pay a dollar!

Because the people wouldn't pay a dollar if there was nothing in it for them? The money comes from ticket sales for the most part.

because no one would buy tickets if they didn't they had any chance at winning.

the whole lottery thing is one of the biggest crocks going, and the people playing the lottery are usually the last ones who SHOULD be playing it as they are basically just throwing their money away.

the lottery is the most regressive form of taxation.

btw, it sounds like you probably don't realize this, but if the pot is $200 million it means they collected probably $400 million or more.

if any private enterprise ran a scam like the lottery they would go to jail for life.

I'm sure they do. I know my dad only buys lotto tix once it gets to 75+ million and gives to the jars inside Albertson's/Safeway whenever he gets change. I always give my change to whatever charitable thing is there, even if it's just the give a penny take a penny.

so where does the other half go!?!? btw im only 14 and i only go off of what i know, which is not much and i believe what i want to. (unless i know its not true)

Well, not for life, but they'd go to jail. Remember, money means jail doesn't exist for you, or at least in such long increments.

it goes to fund state projects. stadiums sometimes, buildings etc.

it goes into the state treasury.

I guess your parents never bought tickets when you were younger? I've never known much other than that it's based on ticket sales and that there's always some they keep behind (how else would it automatically start at 7 mil here in Cali once someone wins it?). Not to be rude but your questions seem kinda dumb.

Basically it's like this. People have an extra couple bucks and figure they'll spend it on some random picks for a chance at xx million dollars. The more people that buy, the higher that goes, but it's never the full amount. They then get 20 annual payments (I think it's 26 now actually) that are split up based on what the pot was when they won.

oooohhhhhh im only 14 so yeah most of my questions are dumb!!! and plus i never really understood the point of lottery, but i knida do, or who created it and why

That's sound all nice if the government was a non-profit orginization. Which it definately isn't.
