Is there any tabulation of this parameter for various cpu/mobo combos? I saw that the albatron mobo can allow a p4 to run as low as .85 volt.
surely that would require some underclocking as well. I'm loookiing for the most efficient combo.

You might find some interesting wattage/voltage information at http://www.sandpile.org. What is your reason for wanting to reduce the voltage/wattage/CPU speed? Maybe consider an alternate CPU such as a VIA C3 if your goal is passive cooling, but don't expect much performance.

No, the wattage doesn't always scale in porportion to voltage or clock speed. You could estimate it, but you could be off by a little bit... cause the more voltage you give it, the more current leakage you'll have, so the higher the wattage will be, not ONLY because of the increased voltage, but because of the leaking current. And it would be reasonable to assume, the less voltage you give it, the less current leakage you'll have. I did a little math a while back to estimate the heat dissipation in watts of overclocked processors. I'll see if I can find that thread... it's been a couple months.

Partly, i want to find the most efficient cpu/mobo combo. After all, why waste watts? I want a media server so I'll need something that runs stable and cool (wasnt that a dire straits song?) Dont need awesome frames per second for fraggin, dont need teraflops to talk to ET,Just want something to make my life smoother. RAID 0 raptors for speed and reliability (those are enterprise drives with a helluva warranty) Something that runs 24x7, and runs, and runs, and runs. Wanted intel for the memory bandwidth (those media files are big), i heard the 865perll has a good and fast memory controller. But I was thinking about a p4 2.8 ghz on an asus p4pdelux- -non overclocked. (I guess the inner me cant let go of the idea of having a hot rod, even if i only want to drive it around town). Motherboards.org says the aopen board is best and they rank the intel mobo below the asus for stabiility. The eco-nut in me says ' go green and save energy' so I also was thinking about watts and volts. The sandpile site is interesting. 70 watss used by a 2.4 ghz chip, 100watts used by a 3 ghz chip. But what does a 2.4 ghz chip oclocked to 250 fsb use? Usually, you dont need to crank up the voltage on those. I've got an IS7 running a 2.4 C with a stock cooler no prob at 3 ghz. Switched to a zalman7000 for noise reduction.

Hmm, my suggestion would be an AthlonXP 1700+ with the Thoroughbred core, on an A7N266-VM/AA. You can jumper it down to 100MHz bus if you want to, but I would leave it as-is. They're fantastically stable with Win2000... got about 30 of these boards at work, and they're a pleasure to support.

A media server won't require a whole lot... you could get an XP1700 like mech said and underclock it... put it on a cheap motherboard with like 512 MB of RAM and you'd be set. Or you could get a P4 2.4C... P4 users, can you lower the FSB? That would be kinda interesting if you could lower the FSB to 100 and have a 1.2 Ghz processor that runs SUPER cool =)

Just run the 2.4c in a 400-533 fsb board. Then you can adjust the FSB from 100-200 (or as high as the board allows).
