mega pixels and sensor size

It seems to me that if you keep increasing megapixels without increasing the sensor size, you are going to increase the noise.
So, I heard the S 500 has a larger sensor than the S410.
So, Theoretically, it could have less noise than the S410 at the same settings, yet have more detail.

right?

In theory.

ok, but what is the reality?
How would one choose between the
Canon S410 (1/1.8" sensor, 4 mp), , S500(1/1.8" sensor, 5 mp), and SD500 (1/1.8" sensor, 7.1
million mp)

the smaller the pixels are the more noise produced when pushing the ISO up on the CCD or whatever

the larger the pixel the less noise it will have becaus eit can gram more info eeasier

that however isnt total true, seeing as Nikon just slammed 12 million pixels on their DX sensor in the D2X, the made them smaller and improved noise 😕

in your case yes the larger sensor with more pixels will most lilely render more detail with less or an equal amount of noise, the sencor coudl have gotten a lil bigger because putting 5mp on the smaller one resulted in more noise

and yes everman, huge sensors with a small mp rating can capture an amazing amount of detail because the pxels are so big (like 4x5 film vs 35mm) , that and in space cooling isnt really an issue

So, in the small S500 size camera realm, does anyone brand or model have a jump on the competition in resolution and noise and sensor size etc....?

they are all pretty much equal at the base ISO, canons will look more saturated out of the camera because they always have because of how they camera boosts saturation,

when you start raisint the ISO all bets are off ewven with teh canons

Large MP with small sensor size pics looks like a smaller MP pic on the same size sensor upscaled to a higher resolution with a sharpen filter applied to it. Very noisy with loss of detail.

Yeah. That camera only costs $899! Better than Canon/Nikon solution IMO.

eh, the pentax *isD and teh *isDs are both 6.1 mp and the BOTH use the SAME sensor that is in the nikon D70
