In it to win it. Pooled up with a few people from work.

Me too.

I'll meet you here tomorrow so we can talk about how the people who won didn't deserve it.
🙁

There's always the chance that we won't find out who actually won for a while.

Don't worry. I'll take some time out of my day to come post tomorrow.

Buy $5 for me. I'm good for it. Especially if we win. We don't have that game in WI. Just PowerBall for the big bucks.

I don't get why people start buying tickets when the amount gets to some insane number. If you want buy lottery tickets you should buy them at any point. When its down to 50million how is "well its just not enough for me to take the chance" make any sense. 4million would change your life just as much as 300million would. Doesn't make any sense to me.

Ive bought tickets but ive never gotten any money on any of the ones i've picked. How many of you pick the numbers and how many of you do it at random from the machine. It would be intersting to see the % of people who pick and win and the% of people who do random, and then the % of people who win at random.

Allow me to explain. Suppose the lotto payout was 3 dollars. Would you waste a dollar then? Also, 2 million (after taxes on your 4 million) wouldn't change my life nearly as much as 300 million. To understand the difference, compare the annuities that are paid out, vs the lump sum payment. The 2 million jackpot is the equivalent of getting 100k per year. That may be life changing for some, but not that huge of a change for many people. 300 million, on the other hand, is 7.5 million per year after taxes. THAT would definitely change most people's lives.

I think the advantage is with people who let the machine pick the numbers.
Actually, the odds of 1,2,3,4,5,6 coming up are EXACTLY the same as any other six digit combination. Anyone who says "yeah, but picking 1,2,3,4,5,6 is really stupid" yet still plays lotto is, in fact, according to their own definition, stupid.

the logic comes from not 1-6 having no shot at winning its if you do win you are virtually guaranteed to have dozens of people playing that same number

and are therefore playing for a chopped pot who knows how many ways

by picking a completely random number than your odds of picking a number that no one else did is far higher

lets say 1000 people pick 1-6 than you are getting 300K before taxes even if you win

if you pick 2, 9, 22, 31 38 - 8 or some other random set of numbers if you win than you win big because it is a lot harder for 2 people to come up with a combination of quasi random number rather than some fixed pattern of numbers

anyway i'm in for $5

I just spent 3 bucks on quick picks.
Their random number generator doesn't seem too random.
All the numbers are bunched around the low or high end.
I did not know that if you play 5 dollars worth, you get a free game.

Which is better -- Lump Sum or Annual payment? I could definitely invest the lump sum wisely ...

I work at a store that sells Lotto, I'm not 100% if this is true, but I heard it from one of the lotto reps who use to come in, plus a few dozen lotto addicts who always buy tickets.

If you choose payments and die, the remainder of the money goes to the state. Something to the effect that if you choose payments a family member might try to kill you so they can get they money. And this will keep the family member from trying to off you. Might just be a myth though.

When I asked the rep about "what if you die from natural causes?" they didn't have a response. They weren't 100% positive about the money going to the state either. But there is a possibility that it's true, if that's the case Payments would be a bad idea.

Someone's gonna win and have their life ruined! Ever hear of the lottery curse?

It isn't so much a curse as it is a test of character and sense that a lot of people happen to fail.

I'd love to win it - I'd give every last penny to charity.

How ironic, that charity money would go straight back to you!

*rimshot* ?

I would probably just live the same way I had lived before except that close people in my life wouldn't have to worry about security anymore.

**EDIT**
By that I mean, I would give them money in a trust which would give out money in short regular amounts. That way they can't waste the money away quickly, and they can figure out what they want to do with the rest of their lives without worrying about the money aspect.

it's been over 15 yrs since i bought a lottery ticket...allowing myself to get brainwashed by all the hype of the $370 mil, i dropped $20 on quick pick...DOH!
