A week ago, our Director told our team in a meeting that a new position is opening up in the department. This would be a promotion over my current title. I asked my director about more details; she then scheduled an hour for us to discuss this afternoon.

Good news....bad news? Standard protocol?

Good Luck! Somethings to be careful of:
- Don't end up with 2 jobs worth of work with only a litte extra pay. What will they do with your current job?
- Why did the last guy leave?
- Is this a good career move, or just more pay?

Hopefully she isn't calling the meeting to "get your input" on who you think would be good for the job (meaning you're not being considered). Happened to me once just like you describe - felt like getting bitch slapped.

Sounds like you are a good candidate for it if she's going through the trouble of an hour long meeting. Good luck!

Standard procedure. I set up meetings like this often (looking to move out of my current role). I name them "x position info session" or "x position synch up".

Didn't go as I planned. Apparently, the position is not in the "accounting arena", and it's not something for me. But she wanted to talk about my desire to get promoted in general. She said she recognizes my frustration that I want to be promoted. She's worried that I'm going to lose patience, etc etc. She said she wants to keep me happy, and that she wants to give me more responsibility and put me on the "promotion track".

It's all good news, but I've heard all of this before.....

Typical woman manager, wants you to like her but she isn't really going to do anything for you.

The only part of that I believe is that she wants to give you more responsibility.

Sorry bro. In the same boat.

You rarely get internal posted promotions.
They want new fresh ideas and people, not the same people paid more.

It sucks, but it's easier to change companies to get a promotion.
