I met my wife though Match.com
Dated a few others through that site, prior to meeting the then future wife.
At the time (not sure about now) you had to pay for membership (not a lot as I recall but enough so that it wasn't free )... I figured that would keep out most of the "imposters". (You know, the 50year old, 300lbs bald guy posing as a 23 year old busty blonde. )

I find there aren't many chicks looking for friends on the internet as far as just chatrooms....on games there are a lot (card types, etc)
I find most really looking for friends just go out. It's male and females mostly looking for quick hookups that are into the one on one chat stuff or introverted / shy people afraid to go out alone.
There are exceptions to this, just like off-line there are.
In general I find when I am single the easiest way to meet people is to use whatever tools you have. I go out to clubs, hit the local bars, some concerts, boat shows/outdoor festivals, get online, etc. Then I usually have at least a date a week....sometimes you get lucky and even have overlap, then there are some dryspells that just happen.
