Meet Other Photographers In Your Area

While photography can definitely be a 'solo' endeavor, it's also a lot of fun to meet and greet other photographers in your area. For an amateur like me, it's a great opportunity to pick some brains about technique, lighting, equipment, etc. And I've found that (at least in my city), photography get-togethers can be lively social events, too.

One good place to start is Flickr. Do a group search using the name of your nearest large city; there might be multiple groups, so I suggest joining the largest (most active) one. Strobist also has discussion groups on Flickr where people organize meetings if you're into learning about more advanced lighting techniques.

My city's Flickr group is having their big annual meeting in about five weeks; very much looking forward to it.

Does anyone else know if any resources for finding local photography groups?

nice

i was out shooting in NYC yesterday and saw a photog carrying several cameras

i went over and started asking questions
he pointed me to several good places (and times) to take good shots

i ended up getting some decent shots because of his advice

so then today when leaving nyc i noticed a few really cool shots of the insanely long escalators (3 stories maybe?), but i didn't take the shot cuz i was too lazy to get the camera out
about an hour later i saw some girl lying down on the moving walkway with her SLR

i confronted her and told her about the really long escalators at the other end of the building. she was happy and walked off in that direction. hopefully she got the shots i wanted to get.

not sure why i typed all this.

Yea, I'd love to if I didn't live in the middle of nowhere.

probably a better spot to photograph.

lots of people travel to middle of no where to get beautiful pictures.

If anyone in the Portland, OR area is interested, our Flickr group has several photo-walks and other activities planned on Saturday, April 26th.

If you want to join us, need some info, a ride, or want to share some equipment, send me a message.
