Medieval War 2 : Total War

I've always hated strategy games, but I came upon this game for free and it got great reviews.

How is this game?

Especially for someone not versed in this genre?

Ermm, it's fun if you like massive battles coupled with thoughtful strategy. I was meh, mainly because of some of the elements I didn't feel were well incorporated, but it is a great game, the graphics will blow you away when fighting those battles. Overall, it's good, I think you'll be pleasently surprised, and anything for free is def worth a shot.

Plus, Kingdoms is coming out, which I am personally very excited, because it will fix alot of the problems I felt M2TW vanilla had, atmospheric wise.

The TW series is one of the better franchises available. Be sure to build financial and trade buildings before you step up your military production. You'll need the coins, believe me.

It's not a RTS.....Battles require more then....."ZERG FTW".

Yeah, that's for sure, and I'd suggest playing on medium, and if that's too easy, go back play on Hard, be sure to watch your cash flow. Also, You're presented with 5(?) playable factions; as soon as you win the campaign, you will be able to play all factions. If you don't finish buyt your faction conquers other factions--as in, eliminating all of the armies and cities, you sorta "unlock" that faction, and can play as it.

The mods that the community have made make the game even more enjoyable. Lands To Conquer and The Long Road are two I would highly reccomend.

Anytime you kill off a faction in the campaign, you unlock that faction. For example, when I crushed the Moors, I gained the ability to play them.

When you beat the campaign, it unlocks all the factions, however, it doesn't seem to be time dependent. I've never completed the long campaign in under the time limit and I've still had access to all factions, except Mongols and Timurids.

Like others have said, it really isn't an RTS... Can't tank/zerg your opponent or base rape anyone 2 minutes in. I'd say it's more akin to Civilization, but with real-time battles that are somewhat forgiving.

I went through the long campaign (240 turns) 3 times with different factions. Even conquered the entire globe once. Very addicting.

I completed the short campaign, and subsequently got access to all civs.

Yeah, just play one of the opening factions to victory (short or long campaign) and it'll unlock all the other factions. You can also mod it yourself if you dont want to go that route. Just copy all the factions to the playable list. Some of the mods already unlock the factions as well. For the new player I suggest playing England or some easy starting faction like that to get a feel for the game and its mechanics before trying one of the other hidden factions.

This game is So complex.

With games, I like to know everything (keyboard shortcuts, best strategy, etc.) so I'm getting a little frustrated.

The battles are fun, but the main world part is tough.
