Medieval 2 and 9800Pro

My friend is looking for a CHEAP video card to run Medieval 2 on. He just needs it to work. I've got a leftover 9800Pro from 2-3 years ago and was wondering if it was worth letting him use for it, or should he just buy a newer $200 AGP card. (He has an HP)

I noticed slowdown sometimes in Medieval 2 with my 7900GTX.

I have a 8800GTX now and it laughs at Medieval 2.. I dont know if you can get enough video card besides a Geforce8 for that game, since theres so much onscreen.

I'd say to use whatever he wants to use thats within his price range and lower res/make it work.
But really, this game can make use of stuff far more powerful (it needs it).. if he doesnt have PCIE and cant get a 8800GTS or GTX.. then wouldnt bother upgrading at all.

The slow downs will come in the fights if you have everything set to max and so forth. The Gamespot review points this out. If he wants to play it at the best possible resolutions and have the big epic battle feel (thousands of combatants) then yeah, he'll need to upgrade. If $200 is his budget then buy the most card for that money. Otherwise he can just use the 9800Pro and play at lesser settings and still enjoy it. It comes down to a personal choice. I know they are still making new AGP cards for the gamers but really 2006 is AGP's last hurrah. Gamers better start planning on upgrading to PCIe from here on out. Otherwise they are gonna have to get used to lower settings and sacrifices.

To play Medieval 2?!? :shocked:

Don't even think about it.

The game probably wouldn't even run on that thing, whereas the 9800pro would be able to run it with mid setting at 1024x768 and get respectable framerates.

The 9800pro is so many times superior to the FX5200 it ain't funny. Even a dusty old battered up 9800pro is exponentially superior to a brand sparkling candy coated shrink wrapped new FX5200.

For $200 or a bit less you can get a ATI x850XT/PE. They are kinda hard to find but careful looking can find one. For a little more than $200 you can get a 7800GS.

Holt shite, don'e even touch the FX5200. Get the 9800Pro way before you get that thing. Now, as far as $$ to performance...get a 6600gt over a 9800pro. The 6600gt flavor can be had for about the same price and it pretty much better at everything than the 9800. Not to knock the 9800 or anything. My understanding is that it is a great card, but the 6600gt is just better.

Also, the X1950pro is about to be released for AGP. I think Best Buy has is listed for $300, but you should be able to get it for closer to $200.

I think the origonal GeForce 256 was faster than the FX 5200 (not kidding, ok, a little). My dad bought the card because he seen "128 mb" on the box... I laughed my azz off because he used that to replace his Radeon 8500, which was faster!

My mom has a FX 5200 and the only way it could run Doom 3 was at 640x480 with everything on the lowest and everything on the control panel on performance. It ran only like at 15 or 20fps at most, The Need For Speed Underground capped at 30fps all the time, she has a P4 Northwood 2.4B, so for that experience I can say that the GeForce FX is more like a 3D Deccelerator than anything else (After the Intel Extreme Crappics)
